Bird ID- May 2025

Bird ID Class

Bird ID is a two day class on the following days:
  • Thursday, May 1 from 6-9pm at McMillan Greenhouse Classroom at UNC Charlotte
  • Saturday, May 3 from 8-11am at Clarks Creek Nature Preserve

Instructor: Judy Walker, Mecklenburg Audubon Society, UNC Charlotte Professor Emeritus

Course Description: Birds are everywhere. There are probably 20-30 species that visit your yard regularly depending on the time of the year. How many can you identify by sight? By sound? We will start the class learning some basic skills for identifying birds and have a brief introduction to avian biology and the families regularly found in the Carolinas. Since birds are often heard before they are seen, learning basic songs of common birds can be challenging but very rewarding. We’ll see how many you already know and learn a few new ones. You’ll learn how to become a community scientist with tools and programs developed by the National Audubon Society and Cornell’s Lab of Ornithology.

Cost: $100 ($95 for UNC Charlotte Gardens Members)

CNPS Credits: 6

*A note on parking: please note that the Thursday class takes place on campus at UNC Charlotte.
