Autumn Leaves in Colored Pencil: A Seasonal Study in Layering & Light

No CNPS Credit

Instructor: Lisa Albinus, Local Botanical Illustrator and Educator

Class Date: This class meets once in person on the following day:

  • Wednesday, November 4th, 2026 from 4:00pm-7:00pm

November is when a leaf becomes magical. Color breaks down unevenly, edges lose their crispness, structure holds on in some places while it lets go in others. We will work together through these complexities in a three-hour workshop, using colored pencil to capture this transformation in a completed piece of artwork.

We will look at form, structure and color, building the vibrant hues fall leaves offer us through deliberate, layered application. You'll train your eye on value transitions, and terminator lines, You will notice where a color turns warm or cool as the light shifts, and leave with a piece you'll genuinely want to frame, along with a layering method you'll carry into whatever you draw next.

This one's for anyone ready to slow down and look closely, whether you're brand new to colored pencil or you've been at it a while and want sharper control (and that slowing-down part is my favorite part of the evening!). No experience required — just a willingness to see what's in front of you and learn how to capture it on paper!.
