Look at an orchid for more than a passing glance and you will be fascinated. Glimmering colors, root systems that beg to crawl, and a throat so architecturally strange it looks like it was built by an alien race, rather than grown. In this three-hour workshop, we will build a finished colored pencil piece together from one of McMillan's own orchid specimens in bloom.
We will focus on layering technique, value transitions, and edge control, training your eye to see how color shifts across the curve of a petal and how the center of the bloom holds its own shape against the petals around it. You'll leave with a piece you'll actually want to frame, and blending methods you can use the next time you sit down to draw.
Whether you're picking up a colored pencil for the first time or you've been at it for years and just want an excuse to slow down, this workshop meets you where you are. No experience required — just curiosity and a willingness to "see" with fresh eyes and insights!

Cost: $40.00
Parking: During the week you must park in our visitor decks. Park in East Deck #1. Parking is free on the weekends. We still recommend parking in East Deck #1. If you park in an open lot through the week you will receive a fine of $85 from the university. We do have very limited free parking spots in front of the Greenhouse, but those fill up quickly.
